What Size Wiper Blades Do I Need? 3 Ways to Find Your Size

Quick answer: Look up your make, model and model year in our wiper size finder, check the size chart for your model below, or measure the rubber blades on your car end to end and round to the nearest inch. Most cars use a longer blade on the driver side.

Wiper blades are sized by length in inches, and most cars take two different lengths at the front. The right size depends on the make, the model and the model year, because blade lengths often change when a model is redesigned. Here are three ways to find yours, from quickest to most hands-on.

Use a wiper size finder

Pick your make, model and model years in our wiper size finder. It shows the driver and passenger blade lengths in inches and links straight to the matching pair. This is the quickest way when you know your model year.

Check the size chart for your model

The table below lists the newest-generation front blade sizes for 33 popular models. Sizes for older years are in each model’s own guide and on its product page.

Measure the blades on your car

If you are not sure of your model year, or the car has been modified, measure the blades already fitted:

  1. Lift each wiper arm away from the glass so the blade stands up.
  2. Measure the rubber blade from end to end. Measure the blade, not the metal arm.
  3. Round to the nearest inch. Front blades are sold in whole-inch lengths.
  4. Do the same on the other side. Many cars use a different length on each side.

If the old blades are not the original ones, a previous owner may have fitted the wrong size, so compare your measurements with the table above.

Why driver and passenger sizes differ

The wipers on most cars sweep in the same direction, and the driver side has to clear a larger area of glass in front of the driver. So the driver blade is usually longer. Some trucks and SUVs with flatter, more upright windshields use the same length on both sides, such as the Ford F-150, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and the Jeep Wrangler in the years we list.

Why sizes change between model years

When a model is redesigned, the windshield shape and the wiper arm layout often change, and the blade lengths change with them. For example, the Ford Escape uses 28″ blades on both sides for 2013–2019 but 24″ and 20″ blades from 2020. Always match the model year, not just the model name.

Blade types and how they attach

There are three common styles of wiper blade:

  • Conventional (frame) blades use a metal frame with several pressure points that hold the rubber against the glass.
  • Beam blades have no frame. A curved spring-steel band inside the blade presses the rubber evenly along its length, and the low profile gives ice and snow less to cling to.
  • Hybrid blades combine a frame with an aerodynamic cover, so they look like a beam blade.

Blades also have to match the end of your wiper arm. A J-hook (a U-shaped hook at the tip of the arm) is the most common, but some cars use a pin, side-lock, push-button or bayonet arm. Before you take the old blade off, look at how it attaches and take a photo so you can fit the new one the same way.

What about the rear wiper?

Hatchbacks, SUVs and minivans often have a rear wiper too. Rear blades are usually shorter and often use a different connector, so measure the rear blade separately or check your owner’s manual.

When to replace your wiper blades

  • Streaks, smears or a hazy film left after each wipe
  • The blade skips or chatters across the glass
  • Cracked, split or hardened rubber
  • Squeaking on a wet windshield
  • Unwiped patches in the driver’s line of sight

Rubber breaks down with sun, heat, ice and road grime, so many drivers replace their blades every six to twelve months, or before winter. Replace both front blades together so they wear evenly.

Where these sizes come from

Every size in this guide comes from the part numbers of the wiper blades we list for each model year range. The two numbers in each part number are the driver and passenger blade lengths in inches. We only list front blades here; rear wiper sizes are not included. If your car has a trim or body style that differs from the table, or you are not sure, send us your year, make and model and we will check before you order.

Questions

What size windshield wipers do I need?

It depends on your make, model and model year. Use a wiper size finder, check the chart for your model, or measure the rubber blades end to end and round to the nearest inch.

Are the driver and passenger wipers the same size?

Usually not. Most cars use a longer blade on the driver side. Some trucks and SUVs use the same length on both sides.

Can I use a wiper blade one inch longer or shorter?

It is best to fit the listed size. A longer blade can hit the windshield frame or the other blade, and a shorter one leaves an unwiped strip.

Where can I find my wiper size in the owner's manual?

Many owner's manuals list blade lengths in the specifications or maintenance section. If yours does not, use a size finder or measure the blades.

Do wiper sizes change between model years?

Yes. When a model is redesigned, the blade lengths often change, so match the model year as well as the model.

How often should I replace wiper blades?

Many drivers replace them every six to twelve months, or when they streak, skip or squeak.
